IRON DEFICIENCYIN THE PREMATURE INFANT Signifkance, and Prevention by the Intramuscular Administration of Iron-dextran

چکیده
I NFANTS born prematurely experience a greater than usual number of serious illnesses throughout the first 2 years of life.1-4 We have previously reported5 that 1 out of every 4 premature infants discharged from our nursery required re-admission to the hospital before the second birthday, usually for treatment of pneumonia or diar rheal disease. The great majority of these babies were also found to have iron defi ciency anemia. In view of the widely-held clinical belief that iron deficiency anemia is associated with an increased incidence of infections,@7 it seemed desirable to study the health record of a group of premature infants maintained in a state of abundant iron nutrition; evidence that the number of infections in such a group was reduced would be of considerable theoretic and clin ical interest. Another object of this study was to determine whether the “¿ prophylac tic―use of intramuscular injections of iron dextran during the nursery stay was a method of preventing iron deficiency ane mia suitable for use in clinical practice.

متن کاملThe prevention of anaemia of prematurity.
It was most unfortunate that, because of the minimal risk of producing a tumour at the site of injection, the use of intramuscular iron-dextran complex, used for some time as an effective prophylactic against late anaemia of prematurity, had to be discontinued. A single injection had a long term effect and avoided the need for daily oral iron. Thus it became necessary to determine if oral treat...
متن کاملA prospective, partially randomized study of pregnancy outcomes and hematologic responses to oral and intramuscular iron treatment in moderately anemic pregnant women.
BACKGROUND Daily oral iron supplementation during pregnancy fails to reduce the prevalence of anemia. However, 2 or 3 intramuscular doses of iron given at monthly intervals were recently found to be effective. OBJECTIVE We compared the safety and efficacy in treating pregnancy anemia of 3 intramuscular doses of iron given at monthly intervals with those of daily oral iron supplementation. D...

Svoboda M., J. Drábek: Intramuscular versus Subcutaneous Administration of Iron Dextran in Suckling Piglets. Acta Vet. Brno 2007, 76: S11-S15. The aim of the study was to compare the development of red blood cell indices after subcutaneous versus intramuscular administration of iron dextran to suckling piglets during early postnatal period. The piglets in group I (n = 17) were injected subcutan...

1. The relative efficacy of oral and parenteral iron administration in the prophylaxis and treatment of Fe-deficiency anaemia of pregnancy has been studied. 2. Intravenous administration of Fe by total dose infusion of Fe dextran was not superior to oral Fe 120 mg/d, 6 d/week for 10-12 weeks. 3. Intramuscular Fe dextran, 100 mg twice per week for 10-12 weeks, produced a significantly greater ri...
